Vioxx Lawsuit News

The FDA said that Celebrex must continue to carry a warning on the arthritis drug's label that it can result in serious ulcer complications.

June 8, 2002

The prescription drugs Celebrex and Vioxx both belong to a new class of drugs known as Cox-2 inhibitors. They have been available in the United States for several years, and were approved to treat osteoarthritis pain, menstrual pain, and acute pain in adults. As these drugs came to market, they were touted by their manufacturers (Merck makes Vioxx, while Pharmacia and Pfizer make Celebrex) as, "effective at reducing arthritis pain, inflammation and stiffness. [They are] also effective for the relief of pain and inflammation of one of the most severe forms of arthritis, RA [rheumatic arthritis]."

Doctors and patients thought that they may have a perfect drug to stop arthritic and other types of pain, without the stomach irritation associated with NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). This was certainly how the drugs were portrayed by their manufacturers in their media campaigns. However, the recent report linking Vioxx to heart attacks is certainly cause for concern among Americans taking these drugs. Contact us for more Vioxx lawsuit information
